Bioidentical Hormones

In recent years, natural bioidentical hormones have become more widely available for both men and women.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is the use of supplemental doses of hormones with a chemical structure identical to those naturally produced in the body.

BHRT allows for an individual prescription of different concentrations of the major hormones; estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, testosterone & thyroid hormones.

Bioidentical hormones differ from conventional Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), which by definition are animal or synthetic hormones. This form of HRT uses hormone structures that differ from those produced in the human body.

Are Bioidentical Hormones Safer?

Bioidentical hormones have received increasing attention since the results of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), 1991 study were announced. The was a large hormone replacement therapy clinical trial which demonstrated the dangerous effects of conventional HRT.

The WHI study was stopped after 6½ years because the women participating in the study experienced an increased incidence of breast cancer.

Natural bioidentical hormones are considered a safer option. These hormone treatments are individually compounded using hormones with the same molecular structure as those found in your own body.

The effects of BHRT are consistent with your normal biochemistry, so side effects are minimised.

Individual Prescription

The tailor made formulations used in BHRT are designed to address your particular hormone balance.

An individual BHRT program to balance your hormones naturally should be undertaken with the guidance of a health practitioner trained in this therapy. Your prescription is then prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacist.
