Bioidentical Hormones

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is the use of supplemental doses of steroid hormones with a chemical structure identical those naturally produced in the body.

BHRT allows for different concentrations of the major hormone components (estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, testosterone & thyroid hormones) to be used, allowing for individual prescriptions.

Bioidentical hormones differ from conventional Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), which by definition uses animal or synthetic hormones whose structures differ from those produced in the human body.

Bioidentical hormones have received increasing attention since the results of the Women's Health Initiative (1991) study was announced. The was a large hormone replacement therapy clinical trial which demonstrated the dangerous effects of conventional HRT. The study was stopped after 6½ years, because the data showed an increased risk of breast cancer.

Natural bioidentical hormones are designed with the same molecular structure as those found in your own body. They are considered a safer option and because their effects are consistent with your normal biochemistry, side effects are minimised.
