The thyroid is often called the master gland of metabolism. The thyroid produces two critical hormones; thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These thyroid hormones control the body's metabolic rate and many other important functions.

You could say the thyroid hormones are like a throttle, boosting your body's ability to speed up metabolism. When the thyroid gland is under active the internal metabolic furnace is turned down and your metabolism slows to a crawl.
