Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid is characterised by low production or reduced activity of the thyroid hormones.

The symptoms usually develop slowly over time, often over a number of years. The symptoms are usually subtle in the early stages, however as the condition worsens the symptoms become more obvious.

For many hypothyroidism can go undiagnosed despite the fact low thyroid disorders are fast becoming the leading cause of weight gain, depression, anxiety, hair loss and ongoing fatigue.
